Position Summary
United Dredging is seeking skilled Diesel Mechanics to support the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of diesel-powered equipment used in dredging and excavation operations. This position is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy equipment, including trucks, trailers, excavators, loaders, dredges, pumps, and barge-mounted systems.
The ideal candidate has experience working with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical components, and heavy equipment diagnostics. Candidates should be capable of performing preventative maintenance, major repairs, and emergency field service while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and minimizing equipment downtime.
United Dredging offers opportunities for Diesel Mechanic Level 2 and Diesel Mechanic Level 3 positions based on experience, certifications, technical ability, and leadership skills.
Job Details
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain diesel engines, heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and related components.
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and scheduled service on equipment including excavators, loaders, trucks, trailers, dredges, pumps, and support equipment.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems using diagnostic tools, scan equipment, service manuals, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Complete repairs ranging from routine maintenance to advanced repairs involving engines, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, drivetrain assemblies, and other major components.
- Support field service operations, including emergency breakdown response and job-site repairs.
- Maintain accurate repair records, maintenance documentation, and parts usage tracking.
- Assist with equipment mobilization, inspections, and operational readiness.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop and work environment.
- Work collaboratively with operators, field personnel, and management to identify and resolve equipment issues.
- Provide guidance and support to less experienced mechanics as needed.
- Travel to project sites as required for maintenance, repairs, and operational support.
Qualifications (vary based on position)
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience as a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment technician, or similar role.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and equipment diagnostics.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in shop and field environments.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices.
Preferred:
- Diesel Mechanic, ASE, OEM, or related certifications.
- Experience with Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere, or similar equipment platforms.
- CDL Class A license or ability to operate trucks and trailers.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- OSHA/MSHA safety training or industrial equipment experience.
- Experience performing advanced diagnostics, major repairs, and mentoring other technicians.
Work Environment
This position is based primarily in a fabrication and maintenance shop environment with travel to active job sites as needed. Work involves exposure to heavy equipment, outdoor conditions, noise, dust, fuels, oils, and physically demanding tasks.
Candidates must be able to lift up to 75 lbs, stand and walk for extended periods, climb, bend, work outdoors, and perform repairs in challenging field conditions.
